Come and Go: Why a Controllable Wooden Pet Door Restores Peace at Home

Why a Controllable Wooden Pet Door Restores Peace at Home

The 5 a.m. scratching at the bedroom door is a nightly ritual nobody enjoys. Neither is being the permanent doorman for a cat that wants in and out eight times before lunch. A controllable pet door hands that job back to your pet, and shuts it down again whenever you need to.

Why "controllable" is the feature that matters

A basic flap is always open, which means it is also open to neighbourhood cats, curious wildlife and draughts. A door with a lockable or adjustable panel lets you set four modes: fully open, in-only, out-only, and locked. That control is what makes a pet door workable in a real home rather than a novelty — you can lock it at night, during storms, or when you want the litter box room sealed off.

Measure before you cut

The opening should sit roughly at your pet's shoulder height, with the step-over no higher than their chest so a small or senior animal is not climbing. Mark the cut from the template, check for wiring and pipes inside the wall, and support the panel while you cut to avoid splintering the door face. Wooden door panels are the most forgiving to work with and accept screws far better than thin hollow-core panels.

Teaching a hesitant pet

Prop the flap fully open and tape it up for a day so the opening is just a hole. Place a favourite treat or the food bowl on the far side. Most cats push through within a day or two once they see there is no barrier. For dogs, call them through from the other side with high-value rewards and lots of praise. Never push an animal through — forced first experiences create months of avoidance.

Small details that pay off

Weather stripping around the frame stops the winter draught. A quiet-close flap avoids the bang that spooks nervous pets. And check the lock periodically; it is the part most likely to be knocked out of alignment.
